DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: The election run-up

The US and the Dominican Republic agreed a free-trade deal on 15 March. The agreement was speedily reached, after only three rounds of negotiations, which started in January. The deal's designers claim that the Dominican Republic got better terms than the Central American countries, which finalised their free-trade deal in two phases: four countries signed up before Christmas while the other, Costa Rica, followed suit in January this year.
